What makes this place special
Carlo Goldoni (1707-1793)
He was a playwright and librettist who reformed Italian comedy by replacing the exaggerated masks and improvised dialogue of the time with fully scripted plays featuring realistic, witty dialogue and well-developed characters. His works remain among Italy's most famous and beloved plays.
His birthplace
The museum is located in Ca' Centani, a quintessential 15th-century Gothic palace, which is also Carlo Goldoni's birthplace.
Scenes from Goldoni's plays
The museum features detailed reconstructions of scenes from Goldoni's plays, with mannequins dressed in 18th-century authentic costumes and surrounded by original furniture and objects from the era.
The puppet theatre
It is the last surviving 18th-century Venetian puppet theatre, once common in the patrician houses of the era, featuring a large collection of its original marionettes.
